Central Park runs more than 1,000 events a year, and most cost nothing — from the world's biggest marathon finish to Pulitzer-winning theater at the Delacorte. Below is the 2026 rundown of what's worth building a trip around, season by season, with timing and ticket details where you need them.
Signature Central Park events in 2026
- Cherry blossoms (mid-April) — the short, spectacular bloom around the Reservoir and Conservatory Garden. A week or two only, so time it to the weather.
- Shakespeare in the Park (May–August) — free Public Theater plays at the open-air Delacorte Theater near Belvedere Castle. Get tickets via the TodayTix lottery, at the box office at noon on show day, or by donating to the Public.
- Loeb Boathouse rowboats & the Venetian gondola (spring–fall) — rent a rowboat on the Lake, or take the gondola near Bethesda Terrace at dusk.
- TCS New York City Marathon (first Sunday of November) — more than 50,000 runners enter at 90th Street and finish at West 67th near Tavern on the Green. Best viewing is East Drive south of 90th.
- Halloween Pumpkin Flotilla (late October) — carved pumpkins set floating on Harlem Meer at sunset.
- Fall foliage (mid-October) — the Mall, the Pool and Bow Bridge hit peak color; it's the busiest photo season in the park for a reason.

SummerStage at Rumsey Playfield
SummerStage is the free outdoor performance series that City Parks Foundation has run in Central Park since 1986. The Central Park stage sits at Rumsey Playfield, mid-park around 69th Street — the closest entrances are Fifth Avenue at 69th or Central Park West at 72nd, near Strawberry Fields. Most of the programme is genuinely free and unticketed: you queue at the gate, they let people in until the field is full, and that is the whole system. A handful of benefit shows each season are paid, and those are sold in advance and clearly marked as such on the SummerStage site.
Practical points that decide whether your evening works. The lineup for the season is usually announced in spring and runs roughly June to September. For a free show with a well-known name, people start lining up well before doors — arriving at the posted door time normally means standing at the back or not getting in at all. There is no seating for most shows; it is a standing field. Bags are checked, and the venue publishes a list of what you cannot bring. And SummerStage is not only a Central Park thing: the same programme runs in parks across all five boroughs, including Prospect Park, so if the Central Park date is impossible there is often a nearer one.
Seasonal favorites in Central Park
Spring (March–May): cherry blossoms peak around the Reservoir in mid-April, tulips bloom at Conservatory Garden, and you'll see Earth Day events, the Frederick Law Olmsted birthday walks, and the Five-Boro Bike Tour cutting through the park. Summer (June–August): Shakespeare in the Park season, plus free films, rowboats and the Venetian gondola at the Loeb Boathouse, free yoga and tai chi on the Great Lawn, and swimming at the Gottesman Pool at the Davis Center on the Harlem Meer. Winter (December–February): Wollman Rink gets the crowds, the Gottesman Rink at the Davis Center up on the Harlem Meer is the quieter option — it opened in 2025 on the site of the old Lasker Rink — holiday markets pop up nearby at Columbus Circle and Bryant Park, and a snow day makes Bow Bridge worth the walk. The year ends with the New Year's Eve Midnight Run.
How to get tickets
Most of the calendar is walk-up and free. Shakespeare in the Park has three ways in: the in-person line at the Delacorte box office (opens at noon, often full by 1 PM in summer), the TodayTix digital lottery (enter the day before), or Public Theater Patron donations. Wollman Rink sells tickets online, day of. For the Marathon you don't need a ticket to watch — just claim a spot along East Drive early.
